I love it when a national chain incorporates gluten-free options into its offerings. I love it even more when the company establishes a separate storefront from which to sell its gluten-free wares, free from cross-contamination. Crumbs, which has dozens of locations across the country, opened a gluten-free location in New York’s East Village in October 2013. The store’s specialty is clearly spelled out on its signage as well as on Crumbs’ website.
Though I’m not a big cupcake eater, I have sampled the gluten-free options at many cupcake and bakery chains—for informational purposes, of course! Most of the larger chains offer just one gluten-free option next to a long list of exotic gluten-ful options. Crumbs, however, goes above and beyond in this department. There were at least ten flavors available when I visited, from carrot cake to red velvet to cookies and creme. Fancier cakes and other pastries were also available, but I had come for the cupcakes.
I debated between the Hostess cupcake lookalike and the cookie dough cupcake, and, upon recommendation by the staff, went with the cookie dough. This came topped with a tiny chocolate chip cookie and a massive pile of frosting, and it had a surprise chocolate filling. Did I mention the cupcake was huge? One was definitely enough for two people to share. Overall, I found the cake a bit dry, but it was a nice treat paired with the sweet frosting. I would love to try more flavors. Who wants to go in on a mini cupcake sampler?
Where? Crumbs Gluten-Free is located in the East Village: 37 E 8th Street, New York, NY (212-673-1500).
